Store of the Week: Spirit Beauty Lounge

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Check out this week’s fabulous store, Spirit Beauty Lounge!

www.spiritbeautylounge.com

skinnyskinny:  Tell us what you love about your neighborhood. What makes it special?

Spirit Beauty Lounge: We are in Park Slope Brooklyn, just blocks from Prospect Park, where we love to go for the Greenmarket Farmer’s Market every Saturday.

skinnyskinny: What makes your store itself unique?

Spirit Beauty Lounge: We wanted to create an online boutique where everything was beautiful both inside and out.  We are obsessed with beautifully formulated, sustainable, organic ingredients and with beautifully designed, sustainable packaging.  We specifically set out to “convert’ people to using natural and organic beauty products, without having to sacrifice luxury.  skinnyskinny was the first product line we picked up!!  The second I saw it I was in love.

skinnyskinny: Tell us about your customers.

Spirit Beauty Lounge: We get “fan mail” from all over the world, especially from women who don’t have anywhere in their town that sells anything safe and natural, that is in any way even remotely glamorous.  Our customers range in age from maybe 14-70.  Some are looking for products that are safe, ethical and effective while others are beauty product junkies (like myself) who just love our selection of fun, adorable products.

skinnyskinny: What is your favorite skinnyskinny product?

Spirit Beauty Lounge: I take Eucalyptus baths every morning or evening in the winter with the salts.  There’s no better way to “thaw” from the cold!  The Rosemary Mint is my current favorite soap and I always have a Lavender Black pepper in the guest room because they always love it.  I’m also addicted to the clover honey citrus lip balm this summer.

Store of the Week: TEICH

skinnyskinny is pretty darn thrilled to announce a great new addition to our blog: Store of the Week! In these weekly blogs we’ll be featuring one of the fabulous stores who carry our products. They’ll tell us all about what makes them unique and give us a taste of what life is like in their cities and neighborhoods. We hope you enjoy!

To kick things off, we didn’t stray far from home. Say hello to Allison and her beautiful store, TEICH.

TEICH is located at 84 East 7th Street in the East Village of New York City, NY 10003.

skinnyskinny: Tell us what you love about your neighborhood. What makes it special?

Allison: There are so many reasons why I love the East Village, (quirky shops, great bars, the Tompkins Square Park dog run) but my favorite is the food. We have the best pizza in the city: Stromboli for cheap slices, Veloce for Sicilian, and Motorino for a Napolitano experience that will blow your taste buds away. Craving a burger? Black Iron Burger is amazing! Vegetarian? Organic Grille or Counter. My all time favorite lunch spot, however, is Café Mogador. I eat there at least twice a week!

skinnyskinny: Tell us a little bit about your store, what makes it unique?

Allison: Everything I sell is made in NYC (or close by), including my own handbag line (also called TEICH). I carry 14 different local jewelry designers, one sunglass line, and skinnyskinny!

skinnyskinny: What are your customers like?

Allison: The diversity of my customers is unbelievable. I get tourists coming in from all over the world. It’s a great feeling to send them off with a unique NYC souvenir. I also get a lot of stylish New York women who appreciate the work of emerging designers.

skinnyskinny: What is your favorite skinnyskinny product?

Allison: I love the soaps. Each one is so delicious! People always comment on how yummy my shop smells. I’m also a big fan of the jasmine body oil.

skinnyskinny at the Veggie Pride Parade

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Posted by: Stephanie

All of the ladies here at skinnyskinny pride ourselves on being vegetarians, so it only made sense for us to participate in New York City’s very own Veggie Pride Parade that took place May 16th. We came armed with tons of free yummy soap samples and lip balms and marched with our fellow non-meat eaters through the streets of Manhattan. I was able to capture some great photos from the event, and wanted to share them with you all. Hope you enjoy!

The mascots of the event, Chris P. Carrot and Penelo Pea Pod. Their chant: “eat your veggies, not your friends!”

Claire and myself with our new veggie friends. You may recognize us as the gals shouting “FREE LIP BALM!” on the corner of North 7th and Bedford here in Brooklyn.

Every year the Veggie Pride Parade hosts a “Best Costume Contest”. Here we are with our favorite bunch of fruits and veggies. Thumbs-up for their new skinnyskinny soap samples!

Don’t have a cow. Literally. Did you know that meat production is the largest contributor to global warming? Lame!

This woman was a barrel of sunshine. We loved her chicken costume, and her sign of course!

We had a fabulous time at the parade and can’t wait for next year. Special shout out to all of our new friends, we hope to see you at the store soon!

Mothers Day at skinnyskinny, May 9th

After everything that we have put our mothers through, after everything that our mothers have put us through…well, I cant decide with which one to start. Both are equally valid statements and I bet if we took a vote we would have to have a tie breaker. Needless to say, none of us would be here if it weren’t for these magical beings that we call mothers. Because of this, skinnyskinny is handing out cupcakes to all of the wonderful mothers who stop in our Brooklyn shop tomorrow. Baked by Clara herself. While supplies last of course.

So here is an idea, take your mom to breakfast or lunch, stroll on over to skinnyskinny, buy her some well deserved organic bath and body goodies, let her enjoy our wonderful products AND some cupcakes. There you go! I’ve planned your day, no more stressing out about mothers day gift giving.  Time is better spent with your mom than at the local drug store trying to decide which mass produced, overpriced card is best.

Pssst…we also have handmade cards.  More on that later.

Administrative Assistant’s Day, April 21

Friday, April 16th, 2010

(posted by Bumble Bee)

When I was younger, I can remember my father talking about, what was then called “Secretary’s Day”.  There was always a moment of slight panic in our house the evening before this holiday.  My father, who is the most organized and structured person whom I’ve ever known, would always seem to wait until the last minute to make arrangements for gifts for his administrator assistants.  Of course, it would be easy for someone to just order flowers on the phone, but my father knew this…it would be “easy”.  Meaning that if the gratitude was easy to show to his employees by simply making a phone call and rattling off a credit card number, the gratitude would always seem a little false and fall short of the appreciation that he actually felt.

Growing up in a very small town our merchant options were kinda slim, especially when one was up against a deadline.  So, what we would do is drive around to our neighborgh’s houses and the local market to purchase bits and pieces of homemade or homegrown things like honey, soaps, fruits and of course flowers.  The next day, on Secretary’s Day (excuse me, Administrative Assistants Day) everyone received a little box of local, homemade goodies.

My father’s employees loved it, it started up conversations that wouldnt normally happen in the office.  Perhaps more worthy conversations about family, food, craft and just living.

We here at skinnyskinny would like for you to not only remember Administrative Assistant’s Day, but perhaps take into consideration something else besides the usual phone call to the florist. Come by the shop and check out all of our goodies or browse what we have online.  We would be more than happy to help you put something unique, organic and handmade together for whomever you wish to admire on April 21st…even if you don’t sign their paycheck.

Some of the Science Behind skinnyskinny

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

(by Bumblebee)

We are 100% carbon-neutral. Being “carbon neutral” means we are not adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Every time one travels, transports or manufactures most anything, there is the potential to add greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. This is because most of the energy that is used during travel or transport, comes from fuels like oil, coal, and gas. How does skinnyskinny work to reduce our carbon footprint?  We purchase wind-power (a clean, renewable energy) for all of our electricity.  We purchase additional carbon-offsets to cover travel, transportation and anything else not covered by our wind-energy. We use recycled, reclaimed, and sustainable materials for all of our packaging.  And with very few exceptions, we make every single product ourselves in our Brooklyn, NY workshop.  Most of us here at skinnyskinny are vegetarians, too.  (There have been lots of studies that show a vegetarian diet contributes less carbon to the atmosphere than a diet meat-based diet.)
