This past Sunday we held the first of our summer Organic Soap Making classes. We wanted to share some of the photos from the workshop with all of you. Feeling left out? We limit our classes to 8 people so everyone has ample time to learn the craft. We still have spots left for our July 17th class, but don’t hesitate to sign up as spaces fill quickly!

The printed word is not dead! We here at skinnyskinny are thrilled to introduce a unique selection of books to our product lineup. Seeing as New York City is home to some of the tiniest apartments and living spaces around, it made perfect sense for us to offer “Designs For Small Spaces” by Jennifer Hudson for our cramped and confined neighbors.

This book is chock-full of innovative design ideas to accommodate even the smallest of dwellings. The best part: there’s info on where to buy each item! No longer will we city slickers be creatively limited by our lack of space. The book quotes Leonarda da Vinci, “small rooms or dwellings discipline the mind, large ones weaken it”. I’m not saying I wouldn’t mind a larger apartment, but at least now I have some tips on how to fully appreciate my small one.

Our 1-year anniversary party was so much fun.  Just enough decadence, just enough debauchery, just enough friends…

If you don’t believe my words, here’s pictorial proof.  It was a great mix of great friends and new faces and of course, pumpkin cupcakes.  Go ahead and mark your calendar for next year’s festivities.

On November 13, 2010, skinnyskinny will celebrate our storefront’s one-year anniversary.  Now, we ordinarily don’t need an excuse to have a party, but we’re more than happy to share this celebration with everyone who has supported us throughout the past year. In short, we love you, guys (and gals).  We’ll have great sales, free samples, raffles, and of course, wine (special thanks to Josh) and refreshments.

So, our workshop/store already smells amazing.  Just ask anybody who’s ever been here.  On days, like today, when we make our awesome Organic Clementine and Clove Body Scrub, the whole place just takes on a slightly warmer, slightly home-ier scent. Clove, while not being at all overpowering in our recipe, is still so evocative of so many good things and nice times. Holidays, spiced tea, fireplaces, warmth… The best part is that it smells so nice on your skin.  The scrub is a blend of sea salt and organic turbinado sugar, jojoba, sesame and virgin coconut oils. It gently exfoliates while leaving your skin incredibly soft and moisturized.  It’s one of my favorite scent blends.  Just the right balance of sugar and spice.

For all you folks in Brooklyn, we’re starting a new project (OMG! it’s so hush-hush…) and we’d be oh-so-happy to take your old empties off your hands.  We’ll even give you something awesome in return (we’re intentionally generous negotiators…). So, drop by our store at 129 Roebling Street with your empty wine bottles.  Say ‘hi’ and know that your empties are really truly being recycled.  So, drink up! It’s for a good cause.  

Having a store is pretty awesome usually, but one of the nicest things is that my dog makes so many friends.  I swear she seems to have more friends than I do.  This is my pup, Haley (the black one) with Blanche outside the store:

When I was younger, I can remember my father talking about, what was then called “Secretary’s Day”.  There was always a moment of slight panic in our house the evening before this holiday.  My father, who is the most organized and structured person whom I’ve ever known, would always seem to wait until the last minute to make arrangements for gifts for his administrator assistants.  Of course, it would be easy for someone to just order flowers on the phone, but my father knew this…it would be “easy”.  Meaning that if the gratitude was easy to show to his employees by simply making a phone call and rattling off a credit card number, the gratitude would always seem a little false and fall short of the appreciation that he actually felt.

Growing up in a very small town our merchant options were kinda slim, especially when one was up against a deadline.  So, what we would do is drive around to our neighborgh’s houses and the local market to purchase bits and pieces of homemade or homegrown things like honey, soaps, fruits and of course flowers.  The next day, on Secretary’s Day (excuse me, Administrative Assistants Day) everyone received a little box of local, homemade goodies.

My father’s employees loved it, it started up conversations that wouldnt normally happen in the office.  Perhaps more worthy conversations about family, food, craft and just living.

We here at skinnyskinny would like for you to not only remember Administrative Assistant’s Day, but perhaps take into consideration something else besides the usual phone call to the florist. Come by the shop and check out all of our goodies or browse what we have online.  We would be more than happy to help you put something unique, organic and handmade together for whomever you wish to admire on April 21st…even if you don’t sign their paycheck.
