Soap Making Classes at skinnyskinny

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

We’ve just added 2 soap making classes to our January schedule.  Classes will be taught by skinnyskinny’s owner/founder, Clara Williams.  These are the first of the classes to be offered by us, but plans include classes on scent creation and perfumery, the basics of sensual massage (in time for Valentine’s Day!) and much more.  For complete details and information, please check here .

Great Things About Having a Store

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

Yesterday, a customer came into the store and was admiring the salvaged wood that we’ve used to build-out our store.  As we were talking, he mentioned that he was from Tennessee.  I told him that I was from Tennessee.  He said that he had bought a house in Springhill, which is not so far from where 2 of my brothers live (one lives in College Grove and the other in Franklin).  It turns out that this man is Peter Jenkins, author of Walk Across America, which was required reading when I was in high school.  Maybe it’s still required reading.  My point in mentioning this is that having a store has all sorts of tangential perks, like meeting really interesting people.   And of course he bought some soaps.  walk across america

$4.95 Flat-rate shipping (thru 12/31)

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

Pssst…We’re offering a great deal on shipping for the holidays.  A flat-rate shipping charge of $4.95 for USPS Priority mail.  Few things could be better than that.  And if you’re buying our stuff, then I seriously don’t know if anything could be better.

Happy Holidays!

Organic Potpourri!

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

For anyone who knows me, you will know I have been on a quest for some time now to re-hab potpourri’s image.  Usually, when I tell someone that I’ve been working on it, I’m lucky if the person just says ‘huh…?’  Often enough, there’s outright derision.  Well, to prove to all those nay-sayers that potpourri can be as beautiful, enticing and complex, here at long last is skinnyskinny’s first entry into the potpourri world: Organic Lavender & Sage Potpourri.

skinnyskinny Organic Lavender & Sage Potpourri

skinnyskinny Organic Lavender & Sage Potpourri

All of the ingredients in this blend are certified organic.  It’s made from lavender buds, white ceremonial sage, lemons and limes (that we cut and dried ourselves), roses, birds’ eye chili peppers, and lots of other little goodies.  This potpourri is great as a room freshener or in sachets.  The scent is strong and well-balanced.  It’s not overly cloying or perfume-y.  It’s really lovely.   And it can be yours very very soon, basically as soon as it gets added to our site.

UPDATE: It is done.  Go here to get your own.  And say good-bye to cinnamon and pine cones in your potpourri.  We’ll be adding our superb Orange and Fennel potpourri tomorrow.  Just wait til you see (and smell) that one.  It’s gorgeous all around.

We take great pride in being ecofriendly, but we still like our fun and sophistication.  skinnyskinny blends the best of all of these things to bring you a wide selection of really green holiday gift ideas.  And if you don’t see something here that you like, just ask us.  We’re adding new products all the time and often customize our products for special occasions.  First up, our Organic Bath Salts Set:

Organic Bath Salts Gift Set (in Ecofriendly Box)

This lovely set comes with 6 of our hand-crafted organic soaps (of your choice).  You also get 10 sachets of our organic bath salts (for a total of 20 ounces).  This all comes beautifully packed in a hand-made ecofriendly gift box that looks like a large book.  One of the greatest aspects of this (besides the great contents) is that it is really easy to re-use this box.  We haven’t plastered our name all over it because we have full confidence that you’ll remember us for our quality and attention to detail.  All of this for $70.  We even tie it all up with a ribbon and we’ll happily include a hand-written gift card.

Next up, our award-winning Organic Soap Set:

Organic Soap Set in Ecofriendly Book Box

Organic Soap Set in Ecofriendly Book Box

This wonderful gift set comes with 6 of our organic soaps (of your choice) and you get to choose from 4 colors of books (pictured).  The book is made from wildgrass, which makes it completely treeless and sustainable.  The boxes have been made using Fair Trade practices.  We tie a ribbon around the packed book and will include a hand-written gift card.  This set won ‘Best Green Packaging’ from the Health and Beauty Association- International Product Design Awards.  Not bad, huh?  Plus, the price is right at $46.

We’ll be adding some other gift ideas to the blog in the next few days.  We’ve got some great organic potpourris in the works, along with lots of other hand-crafted gift-ables.

And if you use this code 120109 , you’ll get free Domestic USPS Priority or UPS Standard shipping (thru 12/24/09). For retail orders only.

skinnyskinny flagship store

Friday, November 27th, 2009

Our store opened 2 weeks ago and we are finally posting some pictures.  We’ve used reclaimed wood for all of our furnishings.  My brother and his wife built most of the store.  You can find them here if you’d like some amazing custom furniture from reclaimed and salvaged materials: www.collegegrovestudios.com.

Our entire line of organic goods are available here, plus we’ll be making some products exclusive to our store.  Starting in January, we’ll be offering soapmaking and other classes here as well.  If you are in the neighborhood, stop by and say ‘hello’.

skinnyskinny Scavenger Hunt contest (with giveaway)

Friday, August 14th, 2009

Greetings to everyone!  We have decided to have a contest.  Not just some boring ol’ contest, but a scavenger hunt. What do you win?  Well, the first person to complete the tasks will receive $100 gift certificate for skinnyskinny’s great organic and ecofriendly products.  2nd place will win a $75 gift certificate and 3rd place will win a $50 gift certificate.  Not bad, huh?

So, what are the rules? You must document (with a photo) the completion of each task and post the images onto our Facebook fan photo album or email them to us and we’ll post them for you.  Our facebook page is here: www.facebook.com/skinnyskinny .  You cannot be an employee of skinnyskinny.  Once you have completed the tasks, just post a comment on the Facebook page.  We’ll verify and voila!  We’ll have the winners.

Tasks:

1. Take a picture of the oddest/funniest use of recycled/reclaimed/repurposed materials. You know, something where they meant well, but something just went a little wrong.

2. Take a picture of your favorite object (not a person) and attach a short tag to the photo to explain the importance.

3. Make something better (and take a picture). This can be about design, or improving on a recipe or even making someone feel better.

4. Do something on your procrastination list and check it off (and send a picture). This would be something that you’ve been meaning to do for a long time, like send a thank you note or call a friend or donate to a charity or weed the garden.

And that’s it.  These don’t need to be done in any specific order.  If anyone would like more information or has any trouble posting images, then simply email us at info@skinnyskinny.com .

This is a great time to enter because we are just about to launch our amazing new organic body scrubs as well as some beautiful (in more ways than one) organic potpourris.

So, get to work.   And good luck

UPDATE: We have a 1st and 2nd place winner, but we are still looking for our 3rd place winner. Consider yourself challenged.  Here is a picture sent in by one of the winners, Sandi Sandman, along with her really touching explanation: Sandi Sandman's cat JunebugThis is Junebug.
She was dumped at a high kill shelter and left for dead.
I consider her, like ALL of my animals, menagerie or farm RECYCLED.
In this day and age,any animal that is born in to this world is because a selfish and uneducated human who allowed their “pet” to breed.
Over 50% of these creatures are thrown away or dumped at shelters.
On average ,it costs 100 dollars a day to house these animals. Half of them are euthanized.

Junebug was dumped after having a litter for kittens.
I met her last June ( 2008 ) and we have been in love ever since.
She is my recycled or found and reusable object.
She makes a great comforter and doubles as a replacement companion when my husband goes on tour.
She gives me hours and hours of stress relief.

I’m a little rusty…

Bear with me here.  I’ve taken almost a 3 month break from updating the blog.  We were doing a lot of work on our site and I kept putting the blog off til I finished with other things and well, a week turned into a month and that turned into 3 months.  I’m still trying to figure out the new format (we were using blogspot before) and the look isn’t quite right yet, but eventually it will be good to go.   In the meantime, hopefully everyone’s had a great summer.   I’ve been to the beach exactly one time and was run off by pesky sand flies.  I’ll try again, though.

Cape Kidnappers- New Zealand

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

Whatever I might say about this place would inevitably still be deficient. The pictures posted here can only show a small fragment of the beauty. Pictures can’t capture the quiet, and the sound of the wind blowing and the birds singing. Pictures can’t capture how nice it is to watch the horses and sheep grazing on the hillside or how delicious the food is here or what it’s like to learn about the Maori peoples that had lived here long ago. The landscape here is, I think, the prettiest that I’ve ever seen. It’s simply beautiful. I can say that every few moments and it’s still not enough. Still, I hope you enjoy the photos.
